How to Change Your Electronic Air Filter: Step-by-Step Guide

Maintaining your HVAC system is essential for ensuring clean air in your home. One crucial task is replacing your electronic air filter, and in this guide, we’ll walk you through the process.

Here’s how you can change your electronic air filter safely and efficiently.

1. Turn Off the Power to Your Furnace

  • The first step is to turn off the power to your furnace. This ensures your safety while you work.
  • Locate the magnetic strip that controls power to your furnace and remove it.
  • Confirm the power is off by checking the red indicator light on your furnace. If the light is off, the power has been successfully shut down.

2. Remove the Housing Unit

  • With the power off, it’s time to remove the housing unit where the filter is stored.
  • Carefully lift the housing unit out from its position, ensuring all components remain intact.
  • Confirm again that the power is off for safety before proceeding.

3. Open the Housing Unit

  • Once the housing unit is out, locate the two red prongs on the top side of the unit.
  • Press the prongs and open the housing unit like a book.
  • Inside, you’ll find the media filter—the part that needs replacing.

4. Remove and Replace the Filter

  • Take out the old media filter.
  • When replacing it, make sure to pay attention to the blue sticker on the new filter. This sticker indicates where the white prong needs to touch to properly energize the filter.
  • Insert the new filter into the housing unit, ensuring it’s properly aligned with the blue sticker for a secure fit.

5. Close the Housing Unit

  • After inserting the new filter, close the housing unit by snapping the red prongs back into place.
  • Ensure that the housing unit is securely closed before reattaching it.

6. Reattach the Housing Unit

  • Place the housing unit back on top of the boot and slide it down into position.
  • Reconnect the low-voltage wire before fully securing the unit in place. This wire helps your system communicate effectively.
  • Once everything is in place, finish sliding the housing unit down.

7. Turn the Power Back On

  • Now that the new filter is installed and everything is back in place, it’s time to turn the power back on.
  • Check for the red indicator light—if it’s on, the power is successfully restored.

Congratulations! Your electronic air filter has been successfully replaced, and your HVAC system is now ready to continue keeping your home’s air clean.
